> > The Belmont women’s basketball team was awarded the highest seed in Bruins basketball history Mar. 12 after sweeping the Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament titles, earning their first-ever NCAA bid after three consecutive regular-season titles.

The No. 14 seed Bruins (25-6) will face the No. 3 seed Georgia Bulldogs (25-6) of the Southeastern Conference in the opening round of the 2007 Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament. Gametime is 1:30 pm Saturday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Television coverage is provided by ESPN while radio coverage can be reached via Belmont’s athletic website (belmontbruins.com).

The Belmont/Georgia winner will play the winner of the Iowa St./Washington game on Monday, Mar. 19 in the second round of the Dallas regional.

The Bulldogs are led by junior post Tasha Humphrey (16.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and senior guard Cori Chambers (12.9 ppg). Backcourt mates Ashley Houts and Janese Hardrick combine for 18.1 ppg and 7.0 apg.

Belmont counters with the A-Sun Player of the Year (Alysha Clark) and Coach of the Year (Tony Cross). Behind Clark’s 17.2 ppg and 12.6 rpg, forward Amber Rockwell (9.4 ppg, 2.9 rpg), guard Shaunda Strayhorn (9.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg) and post Jessica Bobbitt (7.7 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 3.0 bpg) form a strong supporting cast of underclassmen talent.

While Belmont has won eight of their last nine games, No. 14-ranked Georgia, the SEC runner-up, has won 11 of their last 13.
